Second positive COVID-19 case at Laurentian confirmed, residence building undisclosed

by Lexey Burns, Editor-in-Chief

Robert Haché, President of Laurentian University, says a new case of COVID-19 in a LU residence is in quarantine, although it’s not linked to a previous case of the virus.

He sent an update to students through email January 20th confirming the test.

“Public Health identifies any close contacts of cases they are in touch with them as soon as possible,”  Haché said.

“With the province having declared a state of emergency, I would like to remind our community that our critical services continue to operate.” Haché says that the minimal staff that had been working on campus are now “working from home once again.”

“However the commitment to student success remains the same.”

Haché reminds those who remain on campus that may be exercising outdoors to maintain physical distancing and to wear a mask when not able to do so.

Haché said “This commitment to public health is a shared endeavour and we all play our part.”

Mia Tucker, a second year English student said that she is “a little worried about my safety in residence.”

“I know that if everyone continues to self isolate and follow the guidelines then hopefully things will get back to usual at an appropriate time,” Tucker said.

This is Laurentian’s second confirmed COVID-19 case in five days, despite current stay-at-home order.

The residence building the case is in has not been disclosed.
