North American students create Tik Tok game out of pandemic

By Lexey Burns, Editor in Chief

In an attempt to make the return to university a little more optimistic, students on the popular app Tik Tok have created a bingo, called the COVID-19 at university edition.

The premise of the game is to list different possible outcomes returning back to campus. Tik Tok student @kara..c created her COVID BINGO: University Edition with some of the outcomes on her board being: “outbreak caused by athletic programs, campus wide quarantine, and student protests.”

As of September 15th, Western University claimed the “outbreak less than ten days into the semester” square. McMaster claimed the “announcing Winter semester is online” square after announcing remote delivery for the remainder of the school year in mid-September and Trent claimed the “on-campus party” after massive outdoor parties raised concerns for the Peterborough campus.

The hashtag #covidbingo on Tik Tok has over 5.9 million views as both Canadian and American students have partaken in the game.

After not having posted any recent updates, @kara..ca said that she is “continuing it but either schools aren’t filling squares or that information is hard to find.”

@kara..ca has amassed over 608.3 thousand views and 69 thousand likes on her COVID Bingo series which is a total of five videos, split into four “and a half” parts, she said.

She also says her inspiration was an American Tik Tok student, @alexisvigario8, who found enough information as of September 9th to have a triple bingo on her card with schools across the United States.

Despite COVID cases rising in Sudbury, Laurentian’s campus still awaits it’s first COVID-19 case.

Robert Haché wrote an email on November 12th saying “I am writing to our community tonight to provide everyone with assurances: at this time there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 within Laurentian University residences.”
