Electrical Fire in Science Buildings Cancels In-Person Activities

By Lexey Burns, Editor in Chief

A small electrical fire was ignited in Laurentian’s Science Ⅱ building late last week.

Tracy Oost, the lab instructor for Forensic Anatomy of the Human Skeleton lab, said that “the fire occurred on Thursday morning at about 10:50 am.” She says that she was told it was an electrical fire in an electrical box on the first floor of Science Ⅱ.

Laurentian University released an email to students saying that the buildings “will be closed for access for the immediate future,” as the fire had caused a power outage.

Oost said that since “the university sent out an email that the building would likely be unavailable for a few days, we cancelled our Friday afternoon laboratory session.”

Dr. Andrée Beauchamp, the course instructor, said that “the lab would have started at 1 but we did not receive official clearance from the university to resume on-campus activities until about 2 pm.”

Third year Forensics student Camila Alonso Díaz said that “it was more of an inconvenience.”

Laurentian University updated students on Friday saying that the power and all methods of communication from the building had been restored. They also said that any previously approved on-campus activities may resume.
