J.N Desmarais Library offers movies through new free streaming service

By Shanleigh Brosseau, Editor in Chief

Need to catch a break between writing papers and studying for exams?

The J.N. Desmarais Library is offering a trial for a film streaming service to be enjoyed by all students.

While the university’s libraries have been closed to students since March 17th until further notice, this streaming service comes as “good news” for students looking to catch a break, or a film.

The J.N Desmarais Library has arranged student access to films with Audio Ciné Films. The platform offers a variety of titles in both English and French, as well as recent releases.

When the company reached out to offer its services to Laurentian, it wasn’t in relation to COVID-19, Ashley Thomson, librarian at the J.N Desmarais Library, said.

But the offering of the streaming service has been some “good news” for the library and students, amid face-to-face service closures.

“I thought that [Audio Ciné Films] was really good news for students,” he said. “They are making all of these new releases available to students on their laptops.”

“From the library’s perspective, one of the things we’re trying to do is really help students,” said Thomson.

This includes waiving fines and requirements to return overdue items until the end of August, and continuing access to electronic articles through RACER services (print copies are not available at this time).

Library reference services at the J.N Desmarais Library are still available through electronic platforms (email, live chat) or virtual appointments with librarians (by phone or Zoom).

Thomson said that the trial for Audio Ciné Films ends April 24, and is encouraging all students to check out the movies.
