Tune in to CKLU’s 2020 Pledge Week for special guest hosts

By Shanleigh Brosseau, Editor in Chief

From February 24th to March 1st, CKLU Radio 96.7 fm is holding their second annual Pledge Week. For Pledge Week, CKLU wants to encourage everyone to support campus and community, not-for-profit radio.

Kyle Vine, CKLU’s Marketing Director said Pledge Week is an opportunity for the Sudbury and Laurentian University community to support the campus and community radio station.

“It brings everyone together,” Vine said. “It’s [also] a way to revive the spirit of what CKLU used to be, and add in that taste of here’s what CKLU looks like now.”

This fall, like other student-funded groups on campus – the Student Choice Initiative affected CKLU’s funding model.

“CKLU is at a really exciting point where I think we are really starting to find a balance between classic, traditional and modern,” he said.

“Over the next two to three years, this [will] be a process of finding what [that balance] is and really embracing it so we create a true connection to the community.”

Vine adds that community radio stations participate in pledge weeks across Canada.

“We’re trying to follow the same model [and] offer something different and unique,” he said.

CKLU’s Pledge Week will consist of a variety of special guest hosts featuring different music styles, to hosts showcasing local stories.

“Pledge Week is a way for us to make the line up a bit better, bringing in some talent that is rarely heard,” Vine said.

To support CKLU 96.7 during Pledge Week 2020, go to CKLU.ca and click on the Donate button, and be sure to tune in this week to listen to the various special guest hosts.

Vine added that some shows are doing song suggestions in the form of donations.

“The more funding we have, the more we can actually do to support the community [including] students, events and businesses.”

According to Vine, ways to show support other than donating include ‘getting the word out’ and tuning in to the shows throughout the week.

“It would be great to see students sharing and talking about what we’re doing,” Vine said.

Vine also encourages students to stop by the CKLU studio to ask questions and find out more about Pledge Week.
