Laurentian University annual Airbandz competition raises $18,000

By Lexey Burns

Every year, Laurentian students gather together to watch the annual Airbandz competition and every year, the competition seems to get larger, resulting in the event becoming more and more successful. For the 2020 Airbandz event, nine teams of approximately twenty students signed up to participate.

Airbandz is a fundraiser held by Laurentian University and is run by the Entertainment Committee Heads. Each team competes against each other to raise the most money (which would be presented to the Northern Cancer Foundation) and have the best performance where students choreograph their own lip syncing dances. This year, there were nine teams who performed.

This year, Airbandz was put together by Cassandra Cowan, Samantha Cooper and Chris Verilli. Last year, the event managed to raise just over $9000, which was a huge accomplishment. The trio’s goal was to surpass the previous year’s total and raise a whopping $10,000 for the Northern Cancer Foundation.

One of the main problems that the trio faced was trying to schedule all the teams’ practices, as they had a limited time period and only so many places to practice. Due to the large amount of teams this year, making sure everyone was satisfied with their schedule was difficult. Fortunately, Cooper, one of the coordinators of Airbandz, is in her third year of running the event, so she has become experienced with situations similar to this.

Airbandz 2020 was held in the Fraser auditorium on Saturday February 8th, with tickets being sold in advance and at the door for $10.

The night started off with dozens of students and parents filing into the Fraser auditorium to admire all the hard work put in by the teams. With the amazing hosts, James Carlin and Félix Laramée, each performance transferred smoothly into the next.

As the evening was coming to an end, awards were presented.

Keelan Dowell received the well deserved Volunteer Award while Noah from the team “University Stereotypes” won the Dax Brown Spirit Award in memory of Dax Brown. They also determined the Top Fundraising Team which was “The Yellow Brick Road” raising over $2300!

All of the teams had performed and were anxiously waiting for the results from the judges from the Northern Cancer Foundation as they narrowed down the top three winners. In third place was Turn Down For Walt, while in second place was Tik Tok and finally in first place, The Greatest Airbandz!

The Airbandz committee wishes to thank everyone for their time and dedication to the cause and they hope to see you again next year!
