The weekend of Oct. 24-15 brought four swim teams to the Jeno Tihanyi Gold Olympic Pool on Laurentian University campus, for an invitational swim meet.

The Ottawa GeeGees, Waterloo Warriors, and a swim team from the Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics (ZUFE) joined the Laurentian Voyageurs, in a meet that was in part created to honour the friendship between LU and ZUFE’s student exchange program.

“The team did very well this weekend for where we are in our training cycle,” commented Head Coach Philip Parker.

Parker also noted that “the men’s sprint events were exciting to watch, as ZUFE had four or five guys that (were) really fast… It helped some of our sprinters step up their game to try and keep up.”

The events were fast-paced, as athletes competed in 50, 100 and 400-meter events in the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, relay medley and relay freestyle categories.

Although the races of the day were extremely close, with many races being won by less than a meter, the results of the weekend scored the GeeGees in first place with 373 points, the Voyageurs in second place with 212 points, the Warriors in third place with 175 points, and ZUFE placing in a close fourth with 174 points.

“This meet and Ottawa’s Invitational will set (the team) up very well for our first big competition this year, which is the deBray Divisional Championship at Brock University.”

The championship competition will take place on Nov. 28 and 29.

The Invitational was the first and only meet Laurentian will hold during the 2015-16 swim competition season.
