Voyageurs tie at home opener, still winless

By Jessica Robinson

Try as they might, the Voyageurs men’s soccer team could not wrangle a win in their home opener against the Carleton Ravens this Sept. 14, ending the game with a 1-1 tie.

The first half played out equally in both ends. First year Dean Pizolinas, number 14, crossed the ball from a corner kick fifteen minutes in, causing a scuffle in the box that nearly lead to a goal, only for the ball to be cleared out of the net by a Ravens player at the last second.

Both teams tried to build up a momentum, but the play continued to shift up and down the field, and neither managed to hit their target before halftime.

The Voyageurs then picked up the pace when the game resumed.

They pushed the play directly into the Ravens’ end, to first year MacKenzy Kropa, number 10, only just coming short on a breakaway within the first minute of the second half.

A penalty drawn in the visitor’s box earned the Voyageurs a penalty shot at the 48th minute mark that resulted in the first goal of the game, scored by number 19, Omar Allison.

The Voyageurs then kept the Ravens on the run for the majority of the half, until number 21 for Carleton, Zef Kraja, placed the ball directly in the back corner, tying up the game at the 83rd minute mark

Laurentian continued to battle it out until the last second, but wasn’t able to find the net again before time ran out.

This tie continues the men team’s stretch without a win this season. The Voyageurs will play UOIT and Trent at home on September 20 and 21, with hopes of ending the streak.
